Fall Break

After our vacation in Munich, I still had one more week off of school. Monday I went into Cologne for some soap, toothpaste, and to look for new winter shoes since my last ones have been used to their end. I looked in several stores, but I only found the 150 euro quality shoes that are supposed to last 2 years, so that had to wait a few days. Reformation Day was on Tuesday and I celebrated by going to watch an outdoor service in Bensberg. There were around 200 people in this public square singing songs and praying together, which was interesting to see so many people out together expressing their faith. Later in the afternoon my host brother and I sat at the table and carved our pumpkins for Halloween. Here in Germany, Halloween isn't as large or widely celebrated of a holiday as in the US, but there's plenty of traditions here that we don't have back home. I spent Thursday in Cologne once again to meet some friends from Hedersleben and go the Volksfest across to the river. It was a bittersweet experience, because I realize how much fun the Texas State Fair is every year. What I did Saturday is probably very predictable for anyone who has been reading this blog post so far. I took the train to the city for the third time to meet with Tanner and help him come up with ideas for some gifts for his new host family. Now I'm taking a quiet day, but, weather permitting, I'll be going to the market going on in Gladbach today.
