Von Newark nach Hedersleben

From August 4th to 6th the 50 students from the across the southwestern states came together to stay in a nice hotel for orientations and discussions. The entire weekend was full of introductions, laughs, and excitement. A bus shuttle, a wait in security, and a few hour wait later we boarded our flight to Frankfurt at 6:50 pm. Because I was seated in the middle aisle, I was unable to record our takeoff. My newest friends, Shay and Rachel helped me stay awake through 7 hour flight which led to my eventual crash.

The minute we landed at 9:30 am we rushed to Carousel 1 to collect our bags and load onto the last bus we'd take on this route. At 4:17 pm a large bus full of sleeping American students stopped in front of the The Monastery Hedersleben.

After a brief walk through the ground floor corridors I left my bags in my room along with my two roommates to find only two beds. With little time to fix the problem we immediately sat down to dinner to eat Kalteplatte and Wurst. We shuffled into the auditorium to hear the night's annoucnements and receive a formal welcome from "das TEAM." Gerd, the language camp head director, led us on a walk through the town and gave us explanations of the notable locations such as: the Feuerwehr Stationnen (Firefighter Station), the makeshift post office, the Gärtnerei (plant nursery), and the NP Discount Kaufhaus (store). By the time we got back a team of groundskeepers had brought in an extra bed to solve that problem. This monastery is truly beautiful and is the oldest building I've been in. This small town is a picturesque German village with the cobbled streets, bikers on the street and no speed limit through the downtown.

  1. Sounds fantastic! But no kasespaetzle? That's disappointing. Nothing says Germany like kasespaetzle.
