Preparation & Vacation

Getting Ready

I've reached my final two weeks in America. What was once 100 days away has become 14 days. Packing has begun and it is not as difficult as I thought to get everything I need for a year. This is probably because I plan to buy my winter clothing and hygiene products in Germany to avoid carrying them. To save on bag space i'm shipping the bulk of my clothing to the Steinrücks', my host family, home. In my bags, will be a portion of the clothing and any necessary items for my first month in Hedersleben. I've been finishing up my summer classes to get ahead of school for when I come back to Rockwall, so I can graduate on time.

Final Celebrations

Since my time is coming to a close, I've made plenty of time to see friends and family. Yesterday a group of my friends threw me a surprise pool party through most of the afternoon. I really enjoyed seeing them all in one place, giving me an idea of the great people I'll come back to. I'm doing my best to find space in my bags for their gifts, most notably a Texas flag to hang on my wall in Bergisch Gladbach. Additionally, we've taken a family trip to Broken Bow, Oklahoma to do some white-water kayaking and tubing on the river here. I've been on this river several times and I always enjoy the trip.

Closing Thoughts

With each day that passes, my excitement grows. I'm not, at this moment, scared or regretting anything. As I've been told through various iterations: "This is a great experience and opportunity, especially on someone else's dime."
